Yes Maria, it is small world. My father and his ancestors come from a small hamlet, Vellambi, near kalavai. We have no connection with that place anymore, but I do recollect, during one of our visits those days: we were given a cermonial royal welcome. The entire village was rejoicing being connected to the electricity grid: thanks to my father who then was a senior civil servant, and could move the relevant papers to light up the God forsaken haitation.

As for the commentor who can clone himself into as many avatars as his needs require him to, he does pepper the pages with stuff that defy imagination. He inspires the muse in me to sing out as I write this note. His penchant for writing 'ixedoc said this or that' to Amartya Sen and his like, do however exalt me to an enviable company and status, howver mythical the allusion is. His talent to connect a good thirty disparate quotes and citations in every comment - is as I sad earlier, enviable. He is inspiration for the song I am humming as I write this note, which goes thus.....

Unnai soli kutram illai, Ennai soli kutram illai - Kaalam seyda kolam adi, Kadavul seyda kutrmadi

Dr.K,

I am not sure...how it happened..but- it has! Who would have thought..that you two kindred spirits would find so much in common (yeah..I am referring to that someone, who calls himself whatever..drags in whomever- M.R.Radha, Chandrababu and even Kamba(n/r) if he has to!) ..you seem to rejuvenate each other, and the fog of melancholy somehow seems to have lifed....and it is delightful to read, your more light-hearted blogs and comments!

*Gosh there is a Kalavai/North Arcot connection too?- it's a small world afterall!

In Kambar Puranam, when the notorious midget pot bellied Sage Durvasa, known for his short temper and anger reached the abode of the kutiram of the young exiled Prince and their lady D, there was a flutter. Dhurvasa  was akin to the present day Rock Stars and always traveled in an entrouge. They to have  had their groupies , hangers on back then and no different from the ones that are today. Dhurvasa arrived and said feed my entrouge and me.  This was disaster of the worse kind. They had heard how Jesuha  had fed a congregation of 10000 strong  with five idlis and buckets of Sambar.........

Fearing the worst they cooked quickly in castor oil and feed the starters to the swamis who it was rumored to have had a bad stomach and decided to leave in a huff.. This then lead Draupadi to curse the midget Sage Dhurvasa. The curse was, you will be a thorny bush and take several janmas till your thorny lantana Mullu  pokes the right gluteus maximus of a Adi Dravidian.

It took nearly thousands of years for that prophesy to fulfill until that fatefool night when our good learned IxeDoc did his nature call saying may this fertilize the growth of another shrub… One Good deed deserves another and with that the butt got poked…….. Both the sobering event have combined to turn Ixedoc from,an out and out going extrovert into a somber recluse, given to reflecting on the great question of life after death. Those that are silly and used to overacting, and hyperventilating, will find the  sheer happiness of that maidan visit which ended that pleasure in a pressure.

Ixedoc Grandmama sang a tune  which  lighted up the sad Ixedoc  on that train to Madras unable to sit squat and lie on his injured back, to this day he whistles when he feels blue; The ditty goes like this and is a foot stomping Feet tapping jingly jingle...

Onnum mae Puriyalla

Ulagathille,, Onnume Puriyalle

Ulagathille...

Ennane Therriyallle, Sonnallum Porriyale.

Unna Polla Eamalle verra  Evinnum ille......

This legend apparently took place on the same hallowed grounds of present day Kalavai which as you all guessed by now is a Banana Skin Republic headed by an imperious dowager Empress who was once named  after a pet  Parakeet  which used to say ever so oft Jolly Jaya

Moral of the Story; From Mighty acorns tiny oak trees grow
