i should have been more articulate i meant, we require vindication from the west.

dear sharmila pn
not nearly so, some western universities are coming in recognizing some strengths ancient beliefs have in them. At least in the phytic world, herbal medicine, turmeric, neem and their pro[perties on health are big news in the west. If someone here itself analyses some of the rituals and gives plausible scientific evidence to back them then we wouldnt have to wait for the west to come and certify us. Our weakness is that we do not appreciate, scientifically that is, our own treasures.

well, most folk rituals do have profound science behind them its only tha no "western university has approved it yet"

dear supriya,
You bet mums and grans know all about the science behind rituals and rites..they are the real repositories of lore and learning, sadly, the info they have is going waste on today's young...

My mom says that all these rituals and customs have been born of the science of old times. You just validated that.

dear ushasuryamani,
Great to hear about so many new things on this front: I wish I could document these for posterity, for, one by one, many of the traditional customs are dying out. While I am not too sure whether all these habits and mores are logical or superstitious, the fact remains, they need to be delved into and recorded.

Ixedoc....I just loved this one. I am a blend of Traditional beliefs & modern adaptability. I believe that the ancients did not say things without reason. There is a Book  "Thaaliyola "  in Malayalam by Vengaanoor Balakrishnan ( translated into Tamil...Olaichchuvadi  by one Ranjan Swamidas ) which gives many reasons for things & beliefs many consider as foolish or superstitious. This is a great book...there are scientific proofs  for perambulating the Peepal tree, Why we should not sleep with our heads  under the door lintel etc. etc. In fact, I was planning to post a blog on this when I saw yours. Apart from these there are other things that have been there in our families....like the herbs given to a new born baby for a couple of months after birth, which doctors disapprove these days...but what do you see ? babies have no resistance & many kids have Lactose Allergy.., Asthma etc. etc.  .well...unheard of those days!!
